The Supply House Shortcut
How to find a great HVAC contractor — by asking the people who know which ones actually do good work.
The Insider Move
What most homeowners don't know — and what the best contractors will tell you themselves.
Every HVAC brand sells its equipment through supply houses (also called distributors). These are the wholesale warehouses where contractors buy their equipment. The people who work at supply houses see every contractor in your area — they know who does careful work, who cuts corners, and who they'd trust with their own family's house. That makes them the single best referral source that almost nobody thinks to use.
"Hi, I'm a homeowner looking to get a heat pump (or AC, or furnace) installed. If it were your mother's house, which contractor would you send? I'm not looking for the cheapest — I want someone who does it right."
Even one call to one supply house puts you miles ahead of most homeowners. Superstar move: call two or three. If the same contractor name comes up twice, you've struck gold — that convergence is worth more than a hundred online reviews.

Pro Tips for Calling Supply Houses
- Ask for the counter or sales team, not the front desk. Say you're a homeowner — they're used to it and generally happy to help.
- Try to call at off-peak hours — mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday. Avoid Monday mornings and Friday afternoons.
- If you're told "we can't recommend one contractor," try: "I understand. If your family member needed it done, who would you call?" The personal framing usually opens the door.
- Superstar move: call more than one brand's supply house. A contractor recommended by both Carrier's supply house AND Mitsubishi's supply house is probably doing great work across the board.
- Write down who referred you. When you call the contractor, say "I was referred by [supply house name]." Good contractors take those referrals seriously.
- Two names from two different supply houses = gold. That convergence is the strongest signal you can get — but honestly, even one good referral from one supply house puts you way ahead of most homeowners.
