Mothman Escape Room Get Started & Hints
Housekeeping - yeah, it's boring, please read so we can all have fun! =)
If you've done a bunch of escape rooms, you know the drill. Basically don't break stuff. Here's the rules:
Notes on locks which can be a touch finicky:
Enough about the rules, have fun!
- No pictures need to be removed from the walls (there are two exceptions late in the game),
- Nothing needs to be torn apart, if it takes more than basic one finger force, you didn't get it open yet.
- Nothing is in the bathrooms. That could be crappy.
- The game generally starts on the main floor and then transitions generally to the basement.
- Please be careful and don't hurt yourself!
- Please leave the escape room pieces where you found them - this is important so we don't lose things so we super duper appreciate it if you can put things back where they came from. Here are reset instructions if you forget where anything goes.
Notes on locks which can be a touch finicky:
- Notebook lock - only slide as arrow shows or you will reset the code
- Directional lock - push top down twice in between attempts
- Button lock - slide switch on bottom when attempting to open
- Number/letter locks - be sure the numbers/letters are right in line, some are more finicky than others, and some have the line on the side not the front.

Backstory
In 1967 there were many sightings of a bird-man creature in Point Pleasant, WV. The newspapers started to call the creature Mothman after the Batman television show and comics. But she wasn’t a moth - and she wasn’t a man.
And in fact it was three creatures in total, which is part of why they were spotted so often in Point Pleasant. Her name was Legira, and she came from a parallel wavelength. As it has been explained to me, there are many parallel wavelengths, but creatures rarely slip through to a different one.
They have to be at the very height of emotion to slip through accidentally. And it was believed that Legira was in prison when she accidentally made her way to earth. But none of us ever learned why she had been imprisoned. I met Legira after she - and her teenage daughter and baby boy - had escaped the Men in Black in Point Pleasant.
They were looking for a safe place to stay with a number of other so-called cryptids in an abandoned mine. Perhaps I’ll tell you more about all that another time. For right now, I’m trying to understand why Legira was imprisoned. She has passed away now. But for my part, I just need to know. What was her dark past?
The group of creatures stayed here for some time, and we became friends of a sort when I was a child. Legira told me that she couldn’t tell what she had been convicted of as it could put anyone who knew in danger with the Men In Black. But I believe that she left me clues here in this house. She has long since passed, and I believe the Men In Black are no longer a great threat. I’ve heard you and your friends are good with puzzles and perhaps can help me to discover my friend’s past. I have her notebook on this table, but I’ve had no luck opening it.
If by some chance you ARE able to find out what happened all those years ago, please send me an explanation to the mailing address I included on the indoor mailbox, hopefully you can find that too.

HINTS
Each puzzle has two hints, one that helps you along, and one that tells you the answer. There's absolutely no shame in using hints! We've done over 70 escape rooms and we still get stuck almost every time. If you want to use them to cheat and skip to the end, knock yourself out, but that does take the fun away. =)
1- Diary
Small hint
Take a look at the back of the diary. Looks like bottles and hot water, where are the bottles? Code is in the order of the bottles.
BIG hint
Run the bottles on the shelf in the red room under very hot water in the kitchen sink. Code is 183, left to right with diary in normal reading position.
5 - Table by front door

Where is there a lock that needs a key?

Look at the thermostat lock box by the refrigerator.

Where can you put the transparency?

Put the transparency on the light box in the kitchen next to the fridge. It says "every 7th letter on page 12" in the diary.
7 - Page 12
SMALL HINT
Look at page 12 in the diary, the page number is on the bottom left. Write down every 7th letter in the text.

Nuts, spices, coffee.

Look around in the kitchen.

Open cabinets above stove.

How many cans of nuts, how many spice containers, how many coffee containers.

10 - Black box

Where is there a 3 digit lock?
BIG HINT
3, 5, 4 - goes in lock on box by fireplace.
13 - Toaster
SMALL HINT
Where do you see a 4 digit lock with colors? What pieces of the symbol are on the marking system sheet? That will give you the code.
BIG HINT
Look in the green bedroom for the "those who live press on" picture. Code is 2741 from the marking system sheet and the parts of the MIB symbol.

SMALL HINT
Figure out who lives. Look for a lock shaped like the background of the picture. It's in the basement. Use the slide at the bottom of the lock to try the code.
BIG HINT
Lock is on an old suitcase in the basement by the washer and dryer. Press on the buttons for those who live. Code is 1637: top left (out), top right (in), 2nd left (in), 2nd right (out), 3rd left (out), 3rd right (out), last left (in), last right(in). 1637. Be sure to slide the slide at the bottom to open.

SMALL HINT
Put code in push button lock on the suitcase in the basement next to the washer and dryer. Be sure to press the slide on the bottom of the lock.

Where is there a keyed lock?

Use the key on the red basement door.
18 - red door office
SMALL HINT
Use blacklight flashlight in the basement, is there a code? Where does it go? This one is NOT a lock. Two other hints in this room: it's not a lock this time and there are two pictures in this room that come off the wall, but not for this puzzle.

Code on poster is 305. When put into phone the code is 381. Code goes into right side cubby under stairs.

SMALL HINT
Did you put on the sunglasses? Is there a hidden place in the office room with a lock?

Code is 7338, lock is in cubby behind picture in the back of Legira's office with the red door.

The music box is the hint. It's a 4 letter code for the lock.

Code is STAR, from Twinkle Twinkle Little Star song. Code goes in box in the same cubby.

It's time to go back upstairs with this code. Where did you see a lock you haven't opened yet upstairs?

Code goes in lock on red bedroom closet door. Code 5762.
24 - Red room closet
SMALL HINT
Put the incriminating documents in the mailbox. Grab the black light flash light. There should be one in the mailbox or closet, if not there's one in the office downstairs. Check the closet wall. Only go up to the attic if you're certain you won't hurt yourself. =)
BIG HINT
Put code 1708 in the lock at the top of the ladder. Please be careful, if you aren't comfortable don't climb the ladder.
